Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Radiocarbon dating of the Late Pleistocene Later Stone Age deposits at Boomplaas rockshelter

For permanent export of the following 8 charcoal samples:

BOL, OLP, BP, YOL, LP, GWA/HCA, CL, BRL7

The permit is issued to Mr Paul Tichmann, Social History Collections Department, Iziko: Museums of South Africa, in collaboration with Mr. Justin Pargeter, Stony Brook University, New York, and Emma Loftus, Oxford University, to permanently export 8 charcoal samples from Boomplaas Rockshelter 538, Oudtshoorn, Eden, for destructive radiocarbon dating scanningĀ  at the Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, Oxford University, UK in January 2016. The specimens are currently hosted by the Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported. The bulk of the material remains in the collections of the Iziko: South African Museum.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective Museum, in which it is accessioned.

3. The material must be hand carried by Mr. Justin Pargeter.

4. Mr. Justin Pargeter is responsible for the transport to the above mentioned facility.

5. The specimens must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 31 January 2017.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
