For (minimal) destructive sampling and temporary export of samples of the following 3 bone fragments of Homo naledi from the cave Rising Star within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site:
U.W. 101-1810, U.W. 101-1788, U.W. 101-1767
The permit is issued to Dr Bernhard Zipfel , Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI) at University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and Dr Lee Berger, ESI, Wits, in collaboration with Dr Renaud Joannes-Boyau, Geoarchaeology and Archaeometry Research Group, Southern Cross University, Australia, tosample 3 bone fragments of Homo naledi and temporarily export samples thereof for Electron Spinning Resonance (ESR) dating at the Southern Cross University, Australia, from February 2016 to 30 June 2017. The specimens are currently hosted by the ESI at Wits.
Conditions:
1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported. The bulk of the material remains in the collections of the ESI at Wits.
2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective Museum, in which it is accessioned.
3. The material must be hand-carried by Dr Lee R. Berger.
4. Drs Lee R. Berger and Renaud Joannes-Boyau are responsible for the transport to and from the above mentioned facility.
5. Dr Lee R. Berger is responsible for the cost of the return of the material.
6. The specimens must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.
8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 30 June 2017.
10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
13. The material must be returned by the date the permit expires.
