SAHRA does not object to the use of the 'the Cricket Pitch' also referred to as 'Alternative 1' for the installation of the solar panels.
SAHRA endorses the findings regarding 'Site 2' also referred to as 'Alternative 2' as less desirable than the Cricket Pitch.
SAHRA does not object to to the findings of the HIA.
The Cricket Pitch has been shown to carry a low level of heritage significance relative to other sites on Robben Island such as the Quarry and the Prison on the Island.
The visual impacts relating to the shipping route and the visual impacts from the Island itself have been shown to be moderate to low. However the glare from the solar panels may have a negative impact and may have to be addressed through the installation of clear view fencing.
Further to the potential negative visual impact of the glare from the panels, safety is a key concern. The solar panels would have to be fenced of in order to demarcate their location and to avoid unauthorized access to the area.
A new application for permit will have to be submitted to SAHRA for the installation of a fence.
Interested and affected parties were consulted as reflected in the HIA. There was minimal objection to the project.
The ex political prisoners were consulted directly during the public participation process and had no objection to the project. It is imperative that they continue to be consulted until the completion of the project.
Photographs showing the completed work must be uploaded to SAHRIS upon the projects conclusion.
All trenching and excavation must be monitored by a professional archaeologist.
All Archaeological material discovered during the course of monitoring activities must be recorded in line with the regulations pertaining to the NHRA (Act 25 of 1999) and material housed at a recognized repository.
