For permanent export and destructive analysis of the following objects:
Charcoal, animal dung and sediment samples from the sites A2SE-1 (Lambasi District), A3NW-8 (Lambasi District), B4NW-1 (Mkambati District) and C4NE-1 (Mkambati District), Eastern Pondoland
The permit is issued to Dr. Marion Bamford (University of the Witwatersrand), on behalf of Dr. Erich Fisher (Institute of Human Origins, Arizona State University) and in collaboration with Dr. Zenobia Jacobs (University of Wollongong), Dr. Rosa Albert (University of Barcelona) and Dr. Frank Neumann (University of Munster), for permanent export and destructive analysis of charcoal, animal dung and sediment samples from the sites A2SE-1, A3NW-8, B4NW-1 and C4NE-1, Eastern Pondoland for radiocarbon dating at Beta Analytic Inc., Miami; OSL analysis at University of Wollongong; and pollen and phytolith analysis at University of the Witwatersrand and University of Barcelona. The material is currently housed at the East London Museum.
Conditions:
1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.
2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the East London Museum.
3. The radiocarbon samples material will be hand-carried to Arizona State University by Dr. Erich Fisher; OSL samples will be couriered to the University of Wollongong; and pollen and phytolith samples will be couriered to the University of the Witwatersrand and University of Barcelona.
4. Drs. Fisher, Jacobs, Bamford, Albert, and Neumann are responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to the above mentioned institutions/collections.
5. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.
7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.
8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 31 July 2017.
9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.
10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
12. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
