This permit is an extension for one year (30 September 2017) to allow for the completion of the analysis of the material exported under permit 2089.
This permit refers to bones and stone artifacts from Varsche Rivier. The specimens are currently hosted by the Archaeology Department at University of Cape Town and will be formally accessioned and curated at Iziko Museum of South Africa on their return. The temporarily exported material refers to material excavated in 2014 and 2015; material excavated in 2009 and 2011 remains at University of Cape Town.
The permit is issued to Dr Jayson Orton, Archaeological Services and Heritage Assessment, in collaboration with Dr Teresa Steele, Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at University of California, and Dr Alex Mackay, Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Archaeological Science at University of Wollongong, to allow for the completion to export the material excavated at Varsche Rivier in 2014 and 2015 via air courier (DHL) for comparative analysis of faunal components and burning on specimens at the Zooarchaeology Lab in the Department of Anthropology at University of California from August 2015 to September 2016.
Conditions:
1. Only the selected representatives of the material (excavated in 2014 and 2015) stored in the collection may be exported. The material collected in 2009 and 2011 remains in the collections of the Archaeology Department at UCT.
2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the respective Museum, in which it is accessioned.
3. The material must be hand carried or air couriered in two emparchments.
4. Drs Teresa Steele and Jayson Orton are responsible for the transport to and from the above mentioned facility.
5. Drs Teresa Steele and Jayson Orton are responsible for the cost of the return of the material.
6. The specimens must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.
8. No destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.
9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the 30 September 2017.
10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
13. The material must be returned by the date the permit expires.
