Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

For sampling of and permanent export of the powder samples from tusks of the following ten (10) specimens from the Brakleegte Area in the Abrahamskraal and Teekloof Formations (Beaufort Group):

BP/1/7282: well preserved; BP/1/7286: unprepared; BP/1/7303: well preserved; BP/1/7305: unprepared; BP/1/7311: unprepared; BP/1/7313: unprepared; BP/1/7316 unprepared; BP/1/7318: well preserved; BP/1/7321: worn tusks; BP/1/7322: fragmented skull with tusk

This permit is issued to Drs. B. Rubidge and M. Day (University of the Witwatersrand) to sample fossil tusks and permanently export the powder samples for isotope analysis. The destructive analysis will include extracting of 10 mg of preferably enamel from tusks. Specimens were selected due to their already incomplete and/or poorly preserved nature. Analysis will take place in the isotope lab at the Université Lyon 1, France by Dr. Emanuela Mattioli.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand.

3. The material will be hand-carried by Dr. Kevin Rey (Université Lyon 1, France) to Université Lyon 1, France on 13 October 2016.

4. Drs. B. Rubidge, M. Day and K. Rey are responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 31 October 2017.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
