Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Permit to conduct an exploratory study for the purposes of identifying the wreck known as the "Ivory Wreck"

The MUCH Unit at SAHRA is pleased to approve the abovementioned permit application. The following terms and conditions apply:

1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, the heritage authority must be provided with the names and qualifications of his authorised representative(s).

2. This permit gives the holder the sole right to work on the site of the wreck known as the "Ivory Wreck" for the duration of the permit period.

3. Work must be limited to the identification of the wreck known as the "Ivory Wreck", which is situated at approximately -33.84362, 18.4846. Work may only be carried out within a radius of 100 meters of the site, except on the landward side, where work must be limited to below the low water mark.

4. Artefacts and material may only be removed from the wreck site for identification purposes. Material that is not essential to identification of the site may not be removed from its original position.

5. All artefacts removed from the site must be tagged and numbered prior to removal, and the number and description of each artefact must be entered into an accession register with pre-numbered pages.  A copy of this accession register must be submitted to the heritage authority with the permit report.

6. All artefacts and material recovered must be recorded, preserved, and identified in collaboration with the Iziko Museums. All artefacts and material must be accessioned at Iziko Museums. No artefacts or material may be disposed of without the permission of the heritage authority.

7. Excavation may only take place if the wreck is not sufficiently exposed to allow identification, and disturbance must be limited to aiding identification only. Excavation is to be carried out in association with Iziko Museums.

8. Should the wreck be positively identified as that of "la Cybelle" or any other wreck, work must cease and the MUCH Unit at SAHRA must be informed immediately. Work may not commence until a new permit application for the identified wreck has been submitted and approved.

9. Adequate recording methods, as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act, must be employed during all work under this permit. The positions of all datum points and excavations, and of all artefacts removed from the wreck must be marked on an accurate plan of the site, which must also include a title, date, north arrow, and scale.

10. A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping and location of finds, features of the wreck, and sea and weather conditions. A detailed log of all dives must also be kept.

11. All photographs taken and video footage recorded during the work must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA. Video footage recorded prior to the issue of this permit must also be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA.

12. An annual progress report on the results of the excavations and analyses must be submitted to the heritage authority issuing this permit on 25 November 2017, 25 November 2018, and 25 November 2019, and a final report is due on or before 25 January 2020.

13. Reprints of all published papers or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with the heritage authority.

14. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.

15. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.

16. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to fill in excavations, and to protect sites during and after excavation to the satisfaction of the heritage authority and the landowner.

17. The heritage authority shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

18. The heritage authority reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
