Conditions:
The MUCH Unit at SAHRA is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit. The following terms and conditions apply:
1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of his authorised representative(s).
2. Work must be limited to the search for and identification of the wreck known as the “SS Waratah.” The pre-disturbance survey may only be carried out within two square nautical miles surrounding the coordinates 31º36’18.5472”S, 29º36’28.1196”E.
3. This permit gives the holder the sole right to conduct a side-scan and sub-bottom sonar scan survey at the above location in the search for the wreck known as the “SS Waratah” for the duration of the permit period. No other person shall hold a SAHRA permit to work on the wreck of the "SS Waratah" while this permit remains valid.
4. This permit does not grant the holder authorisation to disturb any archaeological material. Identification of the wreck must only be obtained via survey results and a visual inspection of the wreck. Photographic evidence of any shipwreck remains may be taken and used for identification purposes, but no identifying artefact(s) may be recovered under the authority of this permit.
5. Should any heritage material be identified as being associated with any heritage resource other than the wreck of the “SS Waratah” during survey, work at that locality must cease and the MUCH Unit at SAHRA must be informed immediately. Any such locality must be subsequently excluded from the survey area referred to in (2).
6. Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. The survey data and results must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA
7. All photographs taken and video footage recorded during the work must be submitted to the MUCH unit at SAHRA
8. A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping, location and features of the site, and sea and weather conditions. A detailed log of all dives must also be kept. This information must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA on request.
9. A final report on the results of the survey must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the expiry of this permit. Should the work be completed before the expiry of this permit, the final report shall be due within two (2) months of the last day of work undertaken under the authority of this permit.
10. Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
12. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
13. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
14. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.
