Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Conditions: 

For permanent export of samples of bone or cementum (250mg per bone/tooth) from Hippotragus leucophaeus and H. equinus from Nelson Bay Cave,Byneskranskop , Boomplaas Cave and Die Kelders Cave 1 (Western Cape Province) for DNA sequencing and carbon dating at the University of Potsdam, Germany. The material is currently housed at the Iziko Museums of South Africa.

The permit is issued to James Brink (Florisbad Quaternary Research Department, National Museum Bloemfontein), in collaboration with Elisabeth Hempel (Institute for Biochemistry and Biology, Potsdam University, Germany), Faysal Bibi (Natural History Museum Berlin, Germany),  Michael Hofreiter (University of Potsdam, Germany) and John Tyler Faith (University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia).

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the Iziko Museums of South Africa.

3. The material must be hand-carried or couriered by a reputable courier to Potsdam University, Germany.

4. James Brink and Elisabeth Hempel are responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to and from the above mentioned institution.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken. Unused samples must be returned to Iziko Museums of South Africa by 20 April 2020.

8. Annual reports on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA (apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za) before or on 30 April 2018 and 2019, and a final permit report before or on 30 April 2020.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
