Permits

The Ditsong Museum of Cultural History and the SAPS has been requested by the Department of Correctional Services on behalf of the Mampuru family,  to conduct a GPR test of an area that has been identified as the place where Kgosi Mampuru I has been buried. Two additional sites will also be surveyed as requested by the Museum. All the relevant permission has been obtained from the Mampuru family and the land owner, Department of Public Works in the earlier permit application for the excavation.

This permit is given to Mr Frank Teichert (Archaeologist from Ditsong) for the GPR Survey of the following three sites:  

-Area outside toilets: 25°45'12.0"S 28°11'06.0"E

-Previously excavated area in the flower bed: 25°45'10.5"S 28°11'05.7"E 

-Car Park: 25°45'10.5"S 28°11'05.5"E

 
Conditions:

1. If the permit holder is not to be present on the site at all times then the heritage authority must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives.
2. Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be employed.  
3. A standard site record form must be lodged on SAHRIS. 
4. A report on the GPR findings  must be submitted to the heritage authority on or before 31 October 2018. A preliminary report must be submitted within three months. 
5. If remains are discovered, they must be kept in situ until exhumation is permitted by SAHRA. It is vital that human remains must at all times be handled with respect and graves should not be disturbed except where unavoidable. The consultation procedures as indicated in the Regulations and the National Heritage Resources Act must be observed as appropriate.
6. Reprints of all published papers or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with the relevant provincial heritage authority and SAHRA.
7. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
8. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.
9. The heritage authority shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
10. The heritage authority reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
