History: This reserve is situated in the Duncanville suburb, Vereeniging, at the dead end of Van Riet Lowe Street off Houtkop Road.
Here prehistoric man collected pebbles from the bed of the Vaal River in order to make the tools he needed for hunting the game that roamed the area and for preparing his food. In those days long gone by the bed of the river was 30 metres higher than it is today and it flowed over the land where Duncanville is at present situated. The whole of this industrial suburb lies on an ancient river-terrace that has yielded considerable evidence of prehistoric human activity hundreds of thousands of years ago.
The reserve is also known as the Van Riet Lowe Reserve in honour of Prof. C. van Riet Lowe who played such a prominent part in the declaration of this site as an historic monument and who by word and personal publication contributed so much to archaeology and archaeological research, in South Africa.
