History: The road between George and Knysna was constructed with great skill between 1862 and 1882 by Thomas Bain. It has seven passes crossing rivers in densely forested gorges. The declared part is unspoilt and includes two concrete bridges. This picturesque gravel road of approximately 11 kilometres, which meanders through high indigenous forest, is part of the original road between George and Knysna. The bridges over the Silver and Kaaimans Rivers date from 1903 and 1904, respectively.
