Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export of Oakhurst sample for aDNA

The permit is issued to Dr Victoria E. Gibbon (Department of Human Biology, University of Cape Town) to temporarily export fourteen (14) samples (11 loose cranial pieces; samples of two ribs (UCT 193 and 208); one loose tooth) from Oakhurst Rock Shelter LSA site, Oudtshoorn District, for aDNA analysis (11 cranial pieces and 1 tooth) and radiocarbon dating (UCT 193 and UCT 208) at Max Planck Institute, Jena, Germany. The material is currently housed at the UCT Human Skeletal Collection. Evidence of public participation with relevant groups was provided.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the remains stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The samples must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the UCT Human Skeletal Collection.

3. The samples will be couriered to Dr. Johannes Krause, Max Planck Institute, Jena, Germany.

4. Dr. Johannes Krause, Max Planck Institute is responsible for the analysis of the samples and Dr. Victoria Gibbon for their transport to and from the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The samples may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

8. The samples must be returned by the time the permit expires.

9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 30 June 2019.

10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
