Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

The following works have been proposed:

Murray’s Harbour wall 1

Careful removal of billboards on wall. 
Careful filling of holes after billboard removal to match surrounding plaster finish.
Cleaning of Wall. 
To fix the original signs back in place.
To fix in place the Murrays Harbour sign to its original placement on the wall.

Repair of Jetty Floor
Remove damaged section and cast new concrete slabs.

Jetty Floor Road Markings
Repaint red & yellow road marking stripes along jetty floor. 

Mooring Bollards
Treat rust and repaint yellow bollards. 

Harbour Buildings
Sanding, filling priming & repainting of walls. 
Sanding and varnishing of wooden Window frames and doors. 
Sanding, priming and painting of Fascia boards. 

Harbour Shop:
Cast off- site of two removable steps for the entry and exit doors to the shop.
The steps are to be plaster primed & finished in black Plascon velvaglo enamel

Wall 2 (Bluestone Wall leading from Harbour Masters Office to Dankie Hek1) 
Careful removal of all the billboards on the wall. 
Removal and (neatening) of electrical cables. 
Restore pointing where needed.
Repair holes in the wall with suitable aggregate. 
Repair bluestone lintel above plaque.
To fix in place the missing Plaque.
Replace missing capping on wall top.

Visitors Centre (Exterior)
Remove rust, prime metal window frames.
Replace cracked window panes.
Replace putty on Window frames.
Repair and paint.

Visitors Centre (Interior)
Sanding, filling and painting of damaged sections of walls.

Visitor Centre Landscaping
Re-seat wood bollards in concrete.
Remove flag poles & re install in new location.
Remove Childrens swings.
Outdoor seating & table.
Removal of litter sign
Remove water fountain
Repair bluestone paving stones leading to Visitor Centre 
Lower electrical box. 

Dankie Hek 1
Repair and paint interior wall affected by water ingress. 
Film Installation room painting. 

Exterior Bars & Doors 
Doors to be sanded and painted. 
Sections of the bars are to be protected with a sealant to prevent further rusting. 

Dankie Hek Window 
Fit non reflective glass to window. 

MSP Exterior
Prep and restore Dankie Hek 2. 
Prep and restore steps and surrounds. 
Prep and varnish window frames. 
Fill and repaint window sills. 

Armory
Needs to be cleaned prior to Installations.

Study room
Needs to be cleaned prior to Installations. 

Registration Room
Needs to be cleaned prior to Installations. 

Guard Room (Admin Office)
Needs to be cleaned prior to Installations.

Censorship Office 
Needs to be cleaned prior to Installations.

Spine Corridor Floor
Repaint enamel black strips on floor sides. 

Spine Corridor Walls
Remove flaking paint from walls. Fill, prime & repaint. 

Spine Corridor Door ( leading to hospital yard)
Repair and refit door. 
Door bullet hinge to be re-welded & greased. 
An anti- Rust primer (NS4) is to applied. 
topcoats in enamel paint to the original colour. 

Spine Corridor Door ( leading to B Block yard)
Rust to be removed by sanding and grinding, Door to be primed and painted to the original colour. 

B Block Yard
Treat Rusted pipes with suitable clear sealant to prevent further corrosion. 

A Section
No wall painting or repair work required

B Section
No wall painting or repair work required

C Section
Refit yard door. 
repair lintel. 

Red Front Grates:
Remove for sanding and repaint yard window grates.

Cream Back Grates: 
Remove for sanding and repaint yard window grates. 

D section
The ramp rail, will be sanded down. The rust removed and prepared with NS4 anti rust primer and finished with cold galvanising paint.
The door and bars will be sanded down. The rust removed and prepared with NS4 anti rust primer and finished with topcoats to the original colour. 

Penguin Boardwalk 
Remove Boardwalk sign.

Final Decision

SAHRA permits the refurbishment and maintenance work as discussed above. A Closing Report composed of photographs of the complete works must be uploaded onto SAHRIS upon conclusion of the project. Please note that these approvals are only applicable to the above mentioned work. A separate case must be opened for the reinterpretation of Robben Island as highlighted in the "RIMs INTEPRETATION CONCEPT -ZANENZA" document.
