Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Kriel Power Station is planning to install an underground MV cable within a stretch which is estimated to be around 400 metres long. The area to be excavated is estimated to be around 500mm deep and 500mm wide. As indicated below, this activity will be taking place within the power station in an area which is already disturbed.

Expanded_Motivation:

According to the heritage impact assessment undertaken by a heritage specialist, Mr Ilan Smeyatsky, on the 21st of February 2019, the area in which this line will be constructed is heavily disturbed due to the development of the power station and its associated underground infrastructure; he further indicated that no historic, Iron Age or Stone Age heritage sites were noted during his site visit undertaken on 21st February 2019. In addition to above, a recent desktop study done by Ms Elize Butler who is a Paleontologist, indicated that Kriel Power Station is located in an area completely underlain by the Vryheid Formation (Ecca Group, Karoo Supergroup). According to the SAHRIS PalaeoMap a Very High Palaeontological Sensitivity was allocated to this formation. However, Due to the site being highly modified/heavy only a moderate possibility of recovering fossil heritage during the construction phase exist (Butler, 2019).
