Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export of StW 573 cranium to the ISIS Neutron scanning facility

The permit is issued to Dr Dominic Stratford (University of the Witwatersrand), in collaboration with Prof Ronald Clarke (University of the Witwatersrand), to temporarily export the cranium of specimen StW 573 from Sterkfontein Caves NHS for neutron scanning on I12-JEEP at the Diamond Light Source and on IMAT at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source facilities, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0DE, UK. Beam time is scheduled from 5 to 9 July 2019, and the material will be returned on 15 July. The material is currently housed at the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representative of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the Evolutionary Studies Institute.

3. The material will be hand-carried by Prof Ronald Clarke to and from the above facility.

4. Prof Ronald Clarke and Dr Dominic Stratford are responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to and from the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The material must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. The specimen must be kept in a secure safe room for sensitive fossils at Diamond Light Source at all times when not being scanned.

8. No destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA upon return of the material to the Evolutionary Studies Institute.

10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
