Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export permit for 2019 sediment and bone samples from Lovedale and Damvlei

This permit is issued to Dr Lloyd Rossouw (National Museum Bloemfontein), on behalf of Dr Michael Toffolo (Bordeaux Montaigne University), for permanent export of ten (10) bone fragments, two (2) tooth fragments and thirty-six (36) sediment samples from MSA site Lovedale, of which four contain a tooth, and one contains shells, as well as thirteen (13) sediment samples and one (1) bone fragment from LSA site Damvlei, Free State Province. Mineralogical analysis (infrared spectroscopy and micromorphology) of the sediment samples will be conducted at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences, University of Tübingen, Germany; mineralogical analysis (infrared spectroscopy) of bone fragments, shells, and ESR on teeth will be conducted at IRAMAT-CRP2A, Bordeaux Montaigne University, France; and radiocarbon dating of sediments and bones will be conducted at D-REAMS Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. The material is currently housed at the National Museum Bloemfontein.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed, and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the National Museum Bloemfontein.

3. The material will be hand-carried to University of Tübingen (Germany) by Kristen Wroth, to Bordeaux Montaigne University (France) by Michael Toffolo and the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) by Elisabetta Boaretto. Part of the sediment blocks may be shipped to Germany via PostNet.

4. Drs Kristen Wroth, Michael Toffolo and Elisabetta Boaretto are responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to the above-mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before 30 September 2020.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Should any legal proceedings arise with regard to this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
