Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

This permit is issued to Dr Justin Bradfield (Palaeo-Research Institute, University of Johannesburg), in collaboration with Dr Carina Schlebusch (Uppsala University & University of Johannesburg), to sample three (3) tufts of human hair from Kruger Cave and permanent export thereof for DNA analysis at Uppsala University, Sweden. The material is currently housed at the Wits Archaeology Collections at University of the Witwatersrand.

Conditions:

1. As the sampling will reduce the structural integrity, suitable records (measurements and photographs) must be taken prior to sampling.

2. Sampling will take place at the Origins collections room under the supervision of the curator of the collection.

3. Only the selected sample of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

4. The sample must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the Origins Centre.

3. The sample will be couriered via DHL to University of Uppsala.

4. Dr Carina Schlebusch (Uppsala University and University of Johannesburg) is responsible for the analysis of the sample and Dr Justin Bradfield for its transport to the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The sample must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

6. The sample may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before 31 December 2020 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Should any legal proceedings arise with regard to this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
