This permit is issued to Professor Victoria Gibbon (Department of Human Biology, University of Cape Town) for destructive sampling of UCT283 and UCT 288 and subsequent export of the above listed samples for radiocarbon and stable isotope analysis at Beta Analytic Inc. (USA) and the Archaeology Department, Oxford University (UK).
Conditions:
1. Only the selected representatives (listed above) of the remains stored in the collection may be sampled and/or exported at the University of Cape Town.
2. As the sampling will reduce the structural integrity, suitable records (measurements and photographs) must be taken prior to and after sampling.
3. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the xyz Museum.
4. Dr Victoria Gibbons and Dr Judith Sealy are responsible for the sampling and analysis of the remains and transport of the samples to the above mentioned institutions/collections.
5. Samples UCT 149 & 151 must be couriered or hand-carried to Beta Analytic Inc. Beta Analytic Inc. 4985 SW 74th Court Miami, Florida 33155 USA.
6. Samples UCT 172, 283, 288, 351, 363b, 422, 450, 451, 578 & 586 must be couriered or hand-carried to the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, Department of Archaeology, Oxford University,
7. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
8. The samples may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.
9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before 30 November 2022 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.
10. Copies of any papers that may result from the analysis of the remains must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
13. Should any legal proceedings arise with regard to this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.
14. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
