Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Pre-disturbance survey on unknown Hermanus shipwreck

The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage (MUCH) unit at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit. This permit constitutes a renewal of existing permit 3126 and will replace said permit upon its expiry.
 
The following terms and conditions apply:
 
  1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of his authorised representative(s).
  2. Work must be limited to the magnetometer survey of an unknown wreck located near Gearings Point in Hermanus.  The survey may only be carried out within a 400m radius of the co-ordinate given as the wreck site coordinate on the site record on SAHRIS, bound by the high water mark on the landward side.
  3. This permit gives the holder, his authorised representatives, and the project specialist/consultant the sole authorisation to conduct a magnetometer survey at the above location to record and map the unknown wreck for the duration of the permit period.
  4. The involvement of the specialist Vanessa Maitland is mandatory during all phases of this project and no information may be withheld from her. She must be permitted to access to site at all times and may inspect works without notice to the permit holder.
  5. Equipment permitted on site must be limited to what is needed to execute the project as described in the application. No equipment which assists in the recovery of archaeological may be taken onto the site at any time.
  6. This permit does not grant the holder authorisation to disturb any archaeological material and is solely limited to a non-intrusive survey of the wreck. Should archaeological material be accidentally disturbed during the course of the survey, SAHRA must be informed immediately. In this event, work must cease and may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA.
  7. Should any heritage material be identified as being associated with any heritage resource other than the unknown wreck, the MUCH Unit at SAHRA must be informed immediately. An area around any such locality may be subsequently excluded from the survey area referred to in (2) at the discretion of SAHRA.
  8. Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. The survey data, results and map must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA together with the permit report referred to in (10).
  9. A detailed logbook must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping, location and features of the site, and sea and weather conditions. This information must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA on request.
  10. A final report on the results of the survey must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the expiry of this permit. Should the work be completed before the expiry of this permit, the final report shall be due within two (2) months of the last day of work undertaken under the authority of this permit.
  11. Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
  12. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
  13. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  14. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder
  15. The activities approved under the authority of this permit may be carried out between 30 December 2021 and 30 June 2023.
  16. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.
