Permit extension for the analysis of 10 painted flakes by Dr Christian Cappelli (University of Oxford) for a pilot study to extract DNA from the paint. The initial analysis for the 2021 period was delayed due to Covid-19 and Laboratory backlog. The Permit is extended for a further one-year period to 31 Decmber 2022.
The permit has been issued to Dr David Pearce (Rock Art Research Institute - University of Wiwatersrand) for the temporary export of 10 painted flakes from the site of Mount Tyndall 2, Eastern Cape Province, to Dr Christian Cappelli (University of Oxford) to undertake a pilot study to extract DNA from the paint.
- The objects or specimens must be clearly marked with accession numbers.
- The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the accession numbers, the name of the site, and the name and address of the permit holder and the Rock Art Research Institute - University of Witwatersrand.
- The material must be hand carried by Dr David Pearce unless written instruction is given by SAHRA.
- The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than Dr Cappelli, University of Oxford without the consent of SAHRA.
- The material shall be returned to South Africa on or before 31 December 2022.
- SAHRA must be notified in writing of the return of the material, and a report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 31 December 2022.
- Copies of all papers or publications resulting from this permit must be lodged with SAHRA.
- SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
- SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
