Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

The permit is issued to Prof. Christopher Henshilwood (SapienCE, University of Bergen) on behalf of Zahra Haghighi (SapienCe, University of Bergen) in collaboration with Prof. Enrico Cappellini  (University of Copenhagen), Prof. Simon Amitage (University of Bergen), and Dr. Karen van Niekerk (University of Bergen) for the temporary export and destructive sampling of  LSA and MSA  materials from Blombos, KDS Klipdrift Shelter, and GSF8 archaeological sites in the south-western Cape, Western Cape Province. The materials are currently housed at  Iziko Museums and the University of the Witwatersrand satellite laboratory in Cape Town.

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site, and the name and address of the permit holder.

3. The material will be couriered to the University of Bergen, Norway where Zahra Haghighi will be responsible for the analysis under the supervision of Karen van Niekerk and Prof. Simon Amitage.

4. Samantha Minies is responsible for the transport of the material to the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5. Zahra Haghighi is responsible for the transport of the materila to the University of Copenhagen, Norway and the return of the material from the above mentioned institutions to South Africa.

6. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged. SAHRA must be notified in writing of the transport the materila from the University of Bergen, Norway to the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. 

7. Destructive analysis or sampling is permitted.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before or on 31 December 2022 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Should any legal proceedings arise with regard to this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
