Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Work must be limited to the excavation and recovery of material from the "Waddingxveen".
Work may not commence without a suitable archaeologist being appointed and a suitable excavation strategy being approved.
Adequate recording methods must be employed.  The positions of all datum points and excavations, and all artefacts removed from the wrecks must be marked on an accurate plan of the site, which must also include a title, date, north arrow and scale.A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping and location of finds, features of the wrecks,and sea and weather conditions.All artefacts removed from the site must be tagged and numbered prior to removal, and the number and description of each artefact entered into an accession register with pre-numbered pages.  A copy of this accession register must be submitted to the SAHRA with the annual report.
For the proper interpretation of these conditions “the agreement” means the Heritage Agreement to be entered into between the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), the Huguenot Museum, the Chief Maritime Archaeologist, the Salvors and other relevant parties. This permit is only valid in conjunction with the agreement and vice versa.
No Work may commence on the site until the agreement has been successfully completed to the satisfaction of SAHRA and its advisers.
The permit gives the permit holder and associates the sole rights to work on the site of the aforesaid wrecks for the duration of the permit period.
Without limiting the generality of condition 10 below, all material and/or artefacts recovered from the said wreck sites shall be recorded, preserved, identified and disposed of/distributed in terms of the agreement.
Without derogating from any indemnities given in terms of the agreement, SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
It s a condition of this permit that the permit holder and other parties to the agreement comply with and are bound by all terms and conditions of the agreement. Accordingly, any breach or non-compliance with any terms and/or conditions of the agreement by the permit holder and such other parties shall be a breach of the conditions of this permit.
A progress report must be sent to SAHRA on or before 31 December 2013 and 31 December 2014. If a satisfactory report is not received, the issuing of future permits will be at risk.
Notwithstanding the conditions of this permit and/or the terms and conditions of the agreement, and in order to maintain the objectives of the National Heritage Resources Act, SAHRA in its sole discretion reserves the right to vary and/or cancel this permit upon notice to the permit holder.
It s the responsibility of the permit holder to fill in, stabilise, protect and conserve the site during and after excavation to the satisfaction of SAHRA and to ensure that the site is stable in the future.
