Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

The permit is issued to Dr. Thembi Russell (University of the Witwatersrand) on behalf of Jay Stephens (University of Arizona), for sampling and export of copper objects from archaeological sites in South Africa for a provenance study at the University of Arizona, USA. The materials are currently housed at  the Universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand.

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed, and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site, and the name and address of the permit holder.

3. The material will be hand carried to the University of Arizona where Jay Stephens will be responsible for the analysis under the supervision of Prof. David Killick .

4. Jay Stephens is responsible for the transport of the material to the above-mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only and may not be sold or exchanged. 

7. Destructive sampling will be done at the Universities of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand where the objects are housed.

8. Un-used or left-over samples must be returned to the respective curatorial institutions.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before or on 30 June 2023 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties because of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Should any legal proceedings arise about this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
