This permit is issued to Johan Nel (Digby Wells Environmental) for the sampling of Two Skeletal remains and the sebsequent export and analysis of teeth samples for both C14 dating and DNA analysis of the remains from Dwars Rivier 372 KT, Burgersfort, Limpopo Province. The materials are currently housed at the Polokwane Museum.
1. Only the selected representatives of extracted teeth samples may be exported.
2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site, and the name and address of the permit holder.
3. The first batch of teeth samples (4, 2 from each set of remains) will be couriered to the Beta Analytic Inc. Laboratory, Miami, Florida, USA where C14 dating will be done.
4. The second batch of teeth samples will be transferred to the Ampath National Refrence Library, Genetics Department in Pretoria for DNA analysis where Dr. Irma Ferreira will be responsible for the analyses.
4. Johan Nel is responsible for the transport of the material to the Beta Analytic Inc. Laboratory.
5. Dr. Irma Ferreira from Ampath will collect the teeth samples from the Polokwane Museum and will be responsible for the transportation of the samples to her Laboratory (Ampath).
6. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA: The materials in this permit will be sent to University of California, Davis, USA for analyses in the second phase of the study, SAHRA must be alerted in writing prior to the material being transferred.
7. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken. Unused samples must be returned to the Polokwane Museum for safekeep with the rest of the skeletal remains by 31 March 2023.
8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before or on 31 March 2023 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.
9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.
10. SAHRA ackowledges consent letters provided by the descendant families in support of the C14 and DNA analysis.
11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
13. Should any legal proceedings arise with regard to this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.
14. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
