Permits

The permit is issued to Zahra Haghighi (University of Bergen) in collaboration with Prof. Christopher Henshilwood (University of Bergen & University of the Witwatersrand), Simon Armitage (University of Bergen), Enrico Cappellini (University of Copenhagen) and Karen Loise van Niekerk (University of Bergen)  for the temporary export 39 archaeological material from Blombos Cave to identify protein residues. The materials are currently housed at  the University of Witwatersrand Satellite Laboratory in Cape Town.

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed, and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site, and the name and address of the permit holder.

3. The material will be couriered via DHL to the University of Bergen, Norway where Dr. Zahra Haghighi  will be responsible for the analysis under the supervision of Simon Armitage in the first phase of the study.

4. The materila will be transfered to Enrico Capellini at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in the second phase of the study. SAHRA must be notfied in writing before this transfer is instituted.

4. Samantha Mienies is responsible for the transport of the material to the above-mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only and may not be sold or exchanged. 

7. Destructive analysis or sampling is permitted.

8. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before or on 30 September 2023 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports.

9. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

10. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties because of any activities in connection with this permit.

11. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

12. Should any legal proceedings arise about this permit or the transport and loan of the material, these proceedings must be addressed within in the South African legislative framework.

13. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
