ProposalDescription:

Proposed Repairs and Renovations due to Storm Damage at erf 928 Brickfield, McCord Hospital, Overport, Durban, KwaZulu Natal. Drawing MCH-1002

Expanded_Motivation:

The contract is for storm-damage repair and all roofs are to be repaired or replaced. Various leaks have been have been identified in the front building, in the offices and in the canteen. The causes are due to the many junctions from the hap-hazard development. The Department want a solution that will prevent future waterproofing problems and reduce maintenance. Guidance on the approach (see options below) is sought from Amafa before proceeding with construction drawings. The site and existing buildings were acquired by McCords Provincial Hospital (date unknown). The hospital on the site across the road was originally McCord Zulu Hospital, founded by American Christian missionaries, physician Dr. James Bennett McCord and Margaret Mellen McCord in 1909. It closed in 2012 and was taken over by the department in February 2014. The existing buildings were built as a residence with outbuildings and a garden. The front building has a Marseille tiled hipped roof with an arched veranda. The outbuildings were of facebrick and sheet roofing, additions and new roofs have substantially changed the nature of the site. The front building, original outbuildings and additions are used as stores and staff canteen by the Hospital. The complex has low architectural heritage significance. The property is situated within the Hospital complex and faces McCord Road which is a controlled road and visitors parking. The north neighbour is staff parking and a generator room and a similar scale residential building further up the road, the south neighbour are school type buildings. The main hospital buildings are across the road from the property The northern portion of the site, which was previously a tennis court was converted to covered staff parking.
