Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

  • The permit holders for this excavation are Dr Job M. Kibii and Prof. Lee R. Berger. 
  • The permit holders must ensure the necessary environmental authorization/ exemption has been obtained from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site Managing Authority before commencing work on site.
  • If the permit holders are not to be present on the site at all times then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives.
  • Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be used. Note that the position of all excavations must be marked on a plan of each site.
  • Sieves used must be fine enough to intercept rodent and other micro-mammalian material.
  • Dump material should be mapped and annotated as to their possible source and content. Care should be taken to build dumps neatly and securely, and not to mix vegetation with rock. The dump toe should prevent cascading and spillage and the angle of repose of the dumped material should provide for a stable slope.
  • A standard site record form must be lodged with the Ditsong Museum.
  • All material collected and excavated, as well as field notes and records, will be curated by the University of Witwatersrand, who will be responsible for the permanent curation and safekeeping of all artefact and palaeontological material in a condition that allows on-going research.
  • A progress report must be submitted to SAHRA on or before 01 December 2012 and 01 December 2013 and a final report is due on or before 01 December 2014.  SAHRA reserves the right to withhold further permits if progress is not deemed satisfactory. Good site maps for the three separated localities indicated must be provided with progress reports, including pre-excavation photographs.
  • Reprints of all published papers, or copies of theses or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
  • If a published report has not appeared within one year of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
  • It is the responsibility of the permit holders to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit, and the excavator is responsible for ensuring that he or she has an understanding with the landowner concerning: the number of visitors and workers; conditions for camping on the property; speed limits on access roads; possible prohibitions on off-road driving; size, type and number of vehicles permitted; possible prohibitions on trespassing beyond the site; disturbing fauna, flora or substrate; erection and demolition of structures on the Site; appropriate hours of visiting and working on the Site; use of firewood, electricity and water; lighting fires and the prevention of uncontrolled fires and any fencing necessary to protect livestock.
  • Conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed. SAHRA and the COH WHS MA must be informed of what those conditions are and should they be renegotiated at a later stage, the SAHRA and the MA must be informed.
  • The licensed excavator shall be responsible for the activities and impacts of all colleagues, students and employees under his or her supervision and for their compliance with the terms of the Heritage Agreement and the Management Plan for this site.
  • Excavators must take measures to ensure the safety of any person who may enter the National Heritage Site as part of their excavation team or as their visitor.
  • All licensed excavators, including colleagues, visitors, students and employees under the direct supervision of the permit holders must carry documents of identification indicating their legitimacy to be on the National Heritage Site.
  • It is the responsibility of the permit holders to protect sites during and after excavation and to ensure that where appropriate, excavations are filled in or sections and loose deposits stabilized with adequate materials (e.g. Loffelstein blocks or army bags in geotextile), to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner. 
  • SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  • SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit upon notice to the permit holders.
