The obverse portrays the diademed head of Queen Victoria and the words VICTORIA REGINA.
The reverse depicts the lion of South Africa crouching in front of a protea bush. Below the lion is a shield with four spears. Above the lion are the words SOUTH AFRICA .
On the edge of the medal the following is inscribed “Pte. F. ColeNo 9 Troop Cape Mounted Rifles”.
