The painting is signed 'JH Pierneef' to the lower right of the boards and inscribed 'TER HERINNERING AAN OOM KLAAS / VAN PIERNEEF FEB 6 1932' on the reverse. The painting depicts the mountains and surrounding countryside of the Namib Desert.
Acquired directly from the artist by Nicholaas Marais ('Klaas') Hoogenhout Thence by direct descent to the present owner N M Hoogenhout or "Klaas" as he was known was a good friend and colleague of the artist and was founder of the Afrikaanse Taalgenootskap", the Afrikaans Language Society. He was also principal of Pretoria Normaalkollege, and rector of the University of Pretoria from 1925-27.
