Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

When the lighthouse was first lit,it burned Argand lamps fueled by sperm whale oil. The light from the lantern could be seen for 6 nautical miles. The lighthouse was expanded to its present height in 1865. In 1922 the range of the lighthouse was extended to 22 nautical miles, in 1926 the foghorn was installed.

General Description: It's a Green Point Lighthouse,it's a first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast.

Environmental Context: It's in a public space near the park

Inscriptions: The building was commenced in 1821and was completed in 1823

Site History: A Lighthouse is a tower building designed to emit light from the system of lamps and lenses and to serve as the navigational aid of maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways
