attended primary school at a Methodist mission. He went on to enroll at Healdtown in
Fort Beaufort where he matriculated with a first class.

In 1947 Sobukwe entered Fort Hare University where he graduated in 1949 with a BA.
degree. He was politically influenced by CS. Ntloko. Sobukwe gave a speech at a Fort

He also studied for a law degree while on Robben Island. One of Sobukwe’s regular

Sobukwe was released from Robben Island in 1969 and sent to Kimberly which
was not his home. In Kimberly, Sobukwe was restricted to the magisterial area.
He occupied a house in Naledi street Galeshewe. Sobukwe completed his law
articles with a local lawyer before he later opened his own practice in 1975.

Sobukwe developed a lung cancer and in 1977 he was operated upon by Dr. Christian
Barnard after he was admitted to Groote Schuur hospital. On his release Sobukwe
returned to Kimberly but again returned to Groote Schuur where he was readmitted on 05
January 1978 as his condition started getting worse. He returned to Kimberly only to be
admitted at the Kimberly Hospital on 09 February 1978. Sobukwe succumbed to the lung
cancer on 27 February 1978. He was buried in Graaf Reinett on 11 March 1978.
