History: The church was built in 1851 and is the oldest Anglican Church in the Diocese of George.

In about 1846 William Henry Newdigate, a bachelor aged 21 years, came to South Africa from Warwickshire and bought a farm in the Piesang Valley which he called “Buccleigh”. Shortly after this he married Caroline Duthie, a seventeen-year-old daughter of Capt. T. J. Duthie of Belvidere near Knysna and a grand-daughter of George Rex. He built this little church at his private expense in 1850 as a temporary place of worship for his family and dependants. It was also to serve as a school.
In the course of one of his many journeys Robert Gray, Bishop of Cape Town, visited this church. He found that it satisfied the needs of the congregation in all respects and authorised its use for the ceremonies of the Anglican Church. He consecrated it on 3rd October, 1855.
Meanwhile, William Newdigate appealed to his father to raise funds in England for building a proper church. A sum of Ri 000 was collected and handed over to ishop Gray for investment. This served as the nest-egg for funds with which the Anglican Church on the hill above Plettenberg Bay was built in 1880.
This little church at Redbourne has remained in use throughout the years. Its well-kept wooden walls, painted iron roof and simple equipment are always ready to welcome worshippers and visitors.

Visual Description: A gravel road winds up the Piesang River Valley to the west of Plettenberg Bay, where it turns sharply to the right to mount a steep rise. A smaller farm road bears to the left and continues to follow the valley. On the southern slope, near the top of the valley, stands the rustic Redbourne church, partly obscured by trees and bushes.
