History: Swellendam was still a fairly remote outpost of civilisation at the beginning of the 19th century. The inhabitants of the district strongly opposed the administration at the Cape, and this resulted in much dissatisfaction and even open revolt.
A vital commodity at the time — and one in strong demand —was gunpowder for fire arms and blasting purposes. Stringent laws were enforced to control the trade, transport and storage of gunpowder. This all led to the eventual erection of powder magazines. It is presumed that this magazine, built in approximately 1850, was erected by the well—known firm Barry and Nephews at the height of its commercial empire. This company erected a similar structure at Robertson. According to some sources it could also have been partly used for supplying gunpowder to the two signal cannon on Kanonkop.
The building is in an excellent condition, except for the door which has been replaced. It is a simple rectangular structure of about three metres by two metres, with an arched roof.
