History: The core of this double-storeyed house probably dates from 1683. The house was rebuilt in its present French Victorian style in 1881 by Capt. John Spence. Sir J. B. Robinson bought Hawthornden in 1891 and lived there until his death in 1927. Count Natale Labia, grandson of J. B. Robinson, donated Hawthornden to the Cape Provincial Administration in 1978, but retains userfruct thereof during his lifetime.
