History: The road from Krugersdorp to the north-west passes the Sterkfontein Caves and some miles further on runs through Hekpoort, a narrow kloof in the southern foot hills of the Magaliesberg Range. On a low hill at the entrance to the Hekpoort, on the farm of that name, there is a blockhouse, built during the Anglo-Boer War by Maj.-Gen. G. Barton, who commanded the British forces in this area in 1901. It was known as ‘Barton’s Folly’ and differs completely from the blockhouses which the British built at such places as Wellington, Laingsburg and Aliwal North.
This blockhouse formed a part of a short line of block. houses that extended from Hekpoort via Maanhaarrand to Breedt’s Nek in the Magaliesberg Mountains.
