History: This historic house is situated at No 275 Jacob Mare Street, opposite Burger’s Park. The part of Pretoria in the neighbourhood of Burger’s Park developed into the really fashionable area of the town in the 1880’s. Here were the houses, for example, of G. A. A. Middelberg, the Director of the Nederlandsch Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij, Comdt.-Gen. Piet Joubert, Gen. N. Smit and others. Here it was, too, that George Heys, part owner of the mail-coach service between Pretoria and Kimberley, had his elegant residence, Melrose House, built in Victorian style.
When the British forces occupied Pretoria in 1900, Lord Roberts made Melrose House his headquarters.
Lord Kitchener succeeded him before the end of the year and also took occupation of Melrose House.
The Peace of Vereeniging which brought the Anglo- Boer War to an end was signed in this house on 31st May, 1902. A bronze plaque on one of the pillars at the front door records this event. The table on which the treaty was signed still stands in the dining room. It . bears a silver plate on which facsimiles of the signatures . have been engraved.
The property has recently been acquired by the City Council of Pretoria to establish it as a period museum. Proclaimed 1971"
