History: This site was part of the old Koedoespoort Aerodrome where Lieutenant-Colonel Pierre van Ryneveld and Flight-Lieutenant Quintin Brand landed for the first time in the Union of South Africa on 17 March 1920 during their epic flight of 46 days from London to Cape Town. They were the first people to fly from London to Cape Town and the last leg of the flight was completed in the aircraft named Voortrekker. Later both Van Ryneveld and Brand were knighted for their contributions to aviation.
