About 24 kilometres north-west of Smithfield along the 214 main road to Edenburg, a road turns off to the right. Some kilometres along this road one sees a large round hill known as Leeuwkop, standing up prominently above the horizon. This hill has given its name to the farm where the famous Boer General, Christiaan Rudolph de Wet, was born on 7th October, 1854, in a little two-roomed house, the foundations of which may still be seen.

The General’s parents were Jacobus Ignatius de Wet and Aletta Susanna Margaretha Strydom. He lived at Leeuwkop until he was five years old, for in 1859 his father left that farm to settle at Kalkfontein in the vicinity of the present-day town of Reddersburg.
