Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

History: As a result of the ""uplift""- clause in the Cape Town Agreement concluded in 1926 between the governments of India and the Africa, the Right Honourable Mr V Srinevasa Sastri, Agent General, wanted to build a combined training school for teachers and a high school for Indians. He started a fund to which Indians in Natal contributed most generously. In apprecitation of Mr Sastri’s services to Indian education the college was named after him and wqs opened in 1929. The building contractor was Mr Percy Osborn. The Indianisation of the staff culminated in the appointment of Dr A.D. Lazarus as the first Indian principal. The Teachers’ Training Department was transferred to Springfield College of Education in 1951
Visual Description: A two-storeyed school building; in Berea style of the union period; hipped tiled roofs with projecting entrance portico; arcades tp two floors on main (entrance) elevation; Alteration: various additions have been made in the character of the original building and to the rear of the original block. Built in 1928 on land donated by the Durban City Council(six acres adjoining Currie's Fountain). The first Indian High Scool opened in 930 in Southern African; 1936 used by the Union of Natal: long association with teacher training and technical education.
