Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout

History: Constructed by Mr Jack Hollis, building contractor for the City Hall, Durban. The Architect is rumoured to have been a Standly Hudson. Jack Hollis was also the founder of the Clairwood race course. From stately home the building later became a boarding house.
Visual Description: A significant Edwardian house of two stories in Baroque Revival style; arched verandas to two sides;

Site Features: Ornate boundary wall with 'Art Nouveau' type iron gate. Outbuildings to be demolished.

Materials: brick : tile
Catalogue: Kearney, 1984, No: 11.16, Significance Category: One of the great homes of Durban, this building is renowned for the quality of its design, finishes and use of high quality materials. It is also associated with the important Durban personality who was also the builder of the City Hall.

Directions:
Building and boundary wall are an important contribution to Florida Road streetscape. Strong corner siting. The most visual building in an important conservation area in Durban ie Florida Road.
