History: The Voortrekkers who suffered most during the night of Friday, 16th February, were those whose laagers stood at the Moordspruit and the Bloukrans River. The first to be attacked were the laagers of the Liebenbergs, the Rossouws and the Bezuidenhouts; next the Engelbrechts, Greylings and Bothmas fell victim to the attack. Many ghastly incidents took place there during that night of horror.
The memory of these events lived on in succeeding generations. At the instigation of Gen. Piet Joubert of the Transvaal, the remains of the victims were exhumed from their scattered graves and re-interred in a communal grave on 16th December, 1895; the remains of Gert Maritz were also transferred from Maritzdam where he had been buried near Loskop on the Little Tugela.
The reburial was a great and solemn ceremony, attended by a large crowd including old Voortrekkers like Marthinus Oosthuizen. The monument was erected in 1897.
