Archive Import: The fort played a major role in the Anglo-Zulu War 1879, being the first fortification constructed by the British after they had crossed into Zululand from Fort Pearson.
History: Fort Tenedos is situated on the left bank of the Tugela River, opposite Fort Pearson. It was built in 1879 and, together with Fort Pearson, guarded the point over the river. It was garrisoned by men from HMS
Tenedos. Colonel Pearson’s column passed this way on 13th January, 1879, and after that date Fort Tenedos figures frequently in official documents and books about the Zulu War. The fort is still in a reasonable state of preservation.
This fort ‘ stands in a historic neighbourhood. It was there that, in 1838, Robert Biggar, Cane and Stubbs with 1 500 Bantu volunteers were almost annihilated by Zulu impis when they tried to go to the aid of the Voortrekkers after the death of Piet Retief and the murders at the Bloukrans River. It was in that vicinity also that the great battle of Ndondakusuka took place between Cetshwayo and his brother Mbulazi in 1856.
