Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Archive Import: Significance: This farmhouse is typical of its period in Natal and prossesses some outstanding features. Founder of the farm was PAR Otto, a land baron of great importance and influence in Natal in the 19th Century who made a considerable contribution to agriculture.
History: Built in 1865 by Petrus Albertus Lyno Otto who trekked from Caledon, Cape in 1839. He was a land baron of great importance and influence in Natal in the 19th century and made a contribution to agriculture in Natal.
Visual Description: farmhouse with thick shale walls; 'leg 'o mutton' gable with entrance to loft.
Interior: local timber used extensively-sneezewood floors and window surrounds, yellowwood ceilings and windowsills:flagstones in passage (seam in nearby river): two open heaths in kitchen with large beam over both- Dutch oven. Stable loft floor cobbled.
Alterartions: addition of bedroom wing: cementing over flagstones in kitchen: original thatch roof replaced by corrugated iron: lounge divided into two rooms.

Site Features: oak trees, grown from acorns, and a vine, brought from the Cape c1839, which are of horticultural significance.
