The initial AIA identified stone walling on Plattekop where mining will take place. A long stonewall with a number of openings follows the southern side of the Plattekop and on the eastern side of the koppie three small semi circles with a diameter of ±8–10m were found. It was noted that these stonewalls are old as they are overgrown with lichens. The initial AIA identified no visible deposit and not a single potential ash heap could be found. It was further document that no walls occur on the western and northern sides where natural rocks form a barrier as the cliffs drop towards the river side, thus the large stonewall and natural rocks together form a circular enclosure. The initial study concluded that stonewalls on Plattekop were either part of a temporary cattle or animal enclosure or could have been an initiation site though no initiation stone cairns (or “phiri’s”) are present and it was noted that the site had probably been used for a very short time. The subsequent AIA survey identified a number of terraces and a large activity area along the northern slopes of the hill. Here, a large wall section and a number of unidentified stone structures were identified. It is possible that this area acted as a living space for commoners where hilltop enclosures on Plattekop might have been were reserved for a person of higher status such as a headman. The site is of medium scientific value and specialist analysis of the layout of walls and terraces, and possible material culture might provide a further understanding of Iron Age site and spatial stratigraphy site layout and spatial use. The site occurs within the Plattekop resource mining area and impact on the site is expected.
