Site Comments:

A small number of Middle Stone Age (MSA) occurrences were observed along the clean water berm route towards the west near Shesheng. The artefact scatter is constituted out of cores and debris flakes on fine grained specularite, jaspilite and banded iron stone. No formal stone tools were observed. The deposition pattern and stratigraphy as observed at this site and elsewhere in erosion gullies and around pans imply that the lithic scatters in this landscape occur mainly as a single horizon within a shallow superficial calcrete formation. Typologically, the artefacts can tentatively attribute to the Middle Stone Ages when compared to similar recorded assemblages in the area (e.g. Beaumont & Morris 1990). The site is of limited significance due to the absence of formal tools and the general loss of artefact context due to construction activities in the area.
