Site Comments:

Site LSF-S3 comprises of the remains of a Colonial Period farmstead but contemporary cultural overlay is evident at
the site, having impacted on Colonial Period site features and resulted in additional contemporary features having
been placed amidst the Colonial Period features radically decreasing the heritage significance of the site. Colonial
period site features include a rectangular stone built livestock enclosure of approximately 8x10m in size with walls
standing in places to roughly 50cm high. The enclosure has evidently been used during recent times. The remains
of a 2nd rectangular stone built enclosure is situated more or less 100m to the south of the 1 stenclosure. The       2nd enclosure measures approximately 20x8m in size with walls having been weathered down to foundation level. In the vicinity of the 1 st enclosure contemporary mounded rubble remains may well overlay a former structure locale, evidenced by short alignments of stone in the vicinity. Rectangular stone foundation remains of more or less 3x6m  are located in the access road and to the west of the access road rubble stone mound remains may well indicate  the locale of the original farm house. Colonial Period remains may well date to the 1880’s when farms were  registered in the area, or soon thereafter: The site is thus formally protected by the NHRA 1999. The site should  preferably be conserved. However, should development require impact on or in direct proximity to the site the  developer should ensure that a Phase 2 archaeological mitigation program precedes development in the area  including the systematic recording of the site features and test pitting.
