The PLSA1 area is characterized by an approximate 180x100m area, inferred to have formerly been quarried for purposes of calcrete extraction or open cast diamond exploration. The area is at present worked down to the calcreted surface on which a low density of Stone Age artefacts was found; an artefact density description is thus not applicable. Artefacts represented cover a range from earlier to later Middle Stone Age (MSA) with a possible Later Stone Age (LSA) admixture. Artefacts are inferred to be in a heavily disturbed secondary context. The PLSA1 locality is situated towards the immediate south-west of what from an aerial perspective can be perceived as a large calcreted area, indicative of a possible extensive palaeo-water body and the PLSA1 finds may be directly related thereto. Water levels can reasonably be inferred to have fluctuated in the past, directly associated with spatially varying Stone Age deposits on the perimeter thereof, of which aspects would have been disturbed in turn again by fluctuating water levels – having resulted in the mixed surface deposits at the PLSA1 locality.
