A dense exposure of fossil shell representing an ancient raised beach is visible in a quarry on the south side of the island. The quarry is currently used as a dumping area for garden and domestic refuse. The fossil shell exposure, which is raised some 12m above the present sea level is extremely old - possibly dating back several million years.
