Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Iron-smelting sites have been recorded along the proposed route of the Spencer Venulu power line. These sites are characterised by open spaces in the vegetation together with concentrations of Iron slag. Cultural artefacts on these sites generally consist of surface scatters that contain fragmented tuyere pipes and iron slag. Several vitrified ceramic
pieces have been noted on these sites but these ceramics did not yield any diagnostic markings. No traces have been found of the actual furnaces although large clay pieces that might have been part of the furnace walls have been found like at 50. At site 50 a cluster of isolated concentrations of slag have been found forming a concentric circle. Large pieces of tuyere pipes are found associated with these iron slag clusters. It might be the position of several furnaces. Refer to sketch
